Etsy fees explained: what it takes in 2026

Etsy charges a US seller a 6.5% transaction fee on the order total, 3% plus $0.25 to process the payment, and $0.20 to list the item in the first place. Those three lines account for almost every deduction on an ordinary Etsy payout, but four more can appear depending on where you are, where the buyer came from and how the sale was found. This guide walks through each one as Etsy publishes it, with worked examples computed by the same engine as the Etsy fee calculator. Every rate below is quoted from Etsy's official fees article and was verified on 3 September 2026.

The three fees on every sale

Etsy stacks its charges rather than bundling them, so it helps to keep them apart.

The listing fee is $0.20 and is charged when you publish a listing, not when it sells. The transaction fee is 6.5% of the total order amount in your listing currency, and Etsy is explicit that this includes anything you charge for shipping and gift wrapping. The payment processing fee is charged separately by Etsy Payments and depends on the country your bank account is in.

Each line is rounded to the nearest cent on its own, the way Etsy bills it, and what you keep is the order total minus the sum of those lines. The methodology explains the arithmetic in full.

For a US seller, the fee on $100.00 is $9.95 ($6.50 transaction fee plus $3.25 payment processing fee plus $0.20 listing fee) and you keep $90.05, an effective rate of 9.95%. For a UK seller, the fee on £100.00 is £11.18 (£6.50 transaction fee plus £4.20 payment processing fee plus £0.48 regulatory operating fee) and you keep £88.82, an effective rate of 11.18%. The listing fee of $0.20 is charged in USD, the currency the platform’s own fee schedule prices it in, so it is not in that total or that rate.

The listing fee is charged more than once

This is the fee most sellers underestimate. A listing costs $0.20 to publish and stays up for four months or until the item sells, whichever comes first. When it sells, Etsy renews it automatically and charges $0.20 again, so a single sale of a single-quantity item usually carries two listing fees over its life, not one. A listing that expires without selling and is renewed also costs $0.20 each time.

The calculator includes one $0.20 listing fee by default, on the reasoning that the sale itself triggers a renewal. Untick "Include the listing fee" if you are pricing an item whose listing cost you want to account for separately, or double the figure if you want to count both the original listing and the renewal.

One detail matters outside the United States: Etsy publishes all of its fixed-cost fees in US dollars and converts them to your payment-account currency when it bills you. The exact amount a UK or Australian seller pays therefore moves with the exchange rate on the day, and the 0.20 shown in your currency is a stand-in rather than a quoted figure.

Payment processing, country by country

Etsy Payments takes a percentage plus a fixed amount, and unlike the transaction fee it varies by market. Two of the six countries here also price by where the buyer is.

A Canadian seller pays 3% + CA$0.25 on domestic orders, and Etsy groups orders from the United States into that same lower rate. Every other international order costs 4% + CA$0.25. An Australian seller pays 3% + A$0.25 domestically and 4% + A$0.25 internationally. For the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and France, Etsy publishes a single processing rate that does not change with the buyer's location, so a US seller shipping to Japan pays exactly what they pay shipping to Ohio.

For a Canadian seller with a buyer outside North America, the fee on CA$100.00 is CA$11.25 (CA$6.50 transaction fee plus CA$4.25 payment processing fee (other international buyer) plus CA$0.50 regulatory operating fee) and you keep CA$88.75, an effective rate of 11.25%. The listing fee of $0.20 is charged in USD, the currency the platform’s own fee schedule prices it in, so it is not in that total or that rate.

The regulatory operating fee

Etsy adds a percentage in a handful of markets to cover the cost of operating there. Of the countries this calculator covers, it applies in the United Kingdom at 0.48%, in Canada at 0.50% and in France at 1.14%. Sellers in the United States, Australia and Germany are not charged it. It is applied to the item price, shipping and gift wrapping, and excludes tax Etsy collects on your behalf.

France's 1.14% is more than double the UK's rate and is worth building into your prices if you sell from there: on a €100.00 order it is €1.14, which is roughly the same as the whole fixed part of the processing fee.

Offsite Ads

Etsy advertises listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Bing, and charges only when one of those ads leads to a sale within 30 days of the click. There are two rates and one cap:

• 15% of the order while your shop has always made less than $10,000 in any consecutive 365-day period. At this level the programme is optional and you can switch it off.
• 12% once your shop has made $10,000 or more in any consecutive 365-day period. At this level participation is mandatory for the life of the shop.
• The fee never exceeds $100 on a single order, whatever the order total.

That 15% sits on top of everything else: on a $100 order it is $15.00, which takes a small US shop's total bill to roughly a quarter of the order. Set the "Offsite Ads" control on the calculator to see the difference on your own numbers. The $100 cap is published in US dollars, and like the listing fee it is not converted here.

Currency conversion

If you list in one currency and hold your Etsy Payments account in another, Etsy converts the payment and charges 2.5% for doing so. It is a single line, applied to the order, and it is switched off in the calculator by default because most sellers list in their own currency. Tick "Payment needs a currency conversion" if you do not.

Pricing to net a target

Because Etsy takes percentages plus fixed amounts, you cannot get to a target payout by adding 6.5% to the figure you want to keep: the percentages are charged on the whole price, including the part that covers the fees. To keep $100.00 you charge $110.99, and the fee is $10.99. The calculator's "I want to net" mode solves this for any amount and country, finding the smallest price whose net lands within one cent of your target.

Keeping the bill down, honestly

There is no trick that makes Etsy's percentages smaller, but three things genuinely change the total.

Fewer, larger orders. The fixed parts — $0.25 of processing and $0.20 of listing — do not shrink with the order, so they hurt small baskets most. For a smaller basket, the fee on $25.00 is $2.83 ($1.63 transaction fee plus $1.00 payment processing fee plus $0.20 listing fee) and you keep $22.17, an effective rate of 11.32%. That is over eleven per cent against 9.95% on a $100.00 order.

Watching the Offsite Ads threshold. Below $10,000 a year the programme is optional; once you cross it you cannot leave. Whether the extra sales are worth 12% of each one is a decision worth making before you get there rather than after.

Listing in the currency you get paid in, which removes the 2.5% conversion fee entirely.

What does not help is quoting shipping separately: the 6.5% transaction fee applies to shipping and gift wrapping too, so moving money from the item price into the postage line changes nothing.

How this compares with selling direct

Etsy's stack exists because Etsy brings the buyer. If you sell the same item from your own site and take the payment yourself, you pay a processor and nothing else. Taking the same order through PayPal, the fee on $100.00 is $3.98 and you keep $96.02, an effective rate of 3.98%. What this guide leaves out

Etsy has fees this guide and the calculator do not model: Etsy Ads (the on-site advertising you fund with a daily budget, which is billed separately from Offsite Ads), Etsy Plus subscriptions, Pattern websites, in-person Square sales, shipping labels bought through Etsy, the Payment Account Reserve, VAT and sales tax that Etsy collects and remits, and dispute or chargeback handling. It also assumes Etsy Payments; sellers in countries where Etsy Payments is unavailable pay differently. Anything specific to your account, including promotional rates, is not published and cannot be modelled here.

When these rates last changed

None of Etsy's help-centre articles carries an effective date, so this schedule is recorded as verified on 3 September 2026 rather than as taking effect on a stated day. The Etsy fee changelog currently holds one entry, the initial verification; every later change is added there with the date and the rule affected, and the schedule is re-verified at least every 60 days. If a figure here disagrees with what Etsy shows you, report it and it will be checked against the official page.

Frequently asked questions

Does Etsy take 6.5% of shipping?

Yes. Etsy states that the transaction fee applies to shipping and gift wrapping when you charge the customer for them. The regulatory operating fee, where it applies, is charged on the same base.

Is the listing fee refunded if the item does not sell?

No. The $0.20 is charged when the listing is published and is not returned, whether the item sells, expires or is deleted.

Can I avoid Offsite Ads fees?

Only while your shop has made less than $10,000 in any 365-day period, and only by opting out in your shop settings. Above that threshold Etsy makes participation mandatory, though the rate drops to 12% and the $100 per-order cap still applies.

Why is my fee higher than the calculator says?

The most common reasons are a second listing fee for the renewal, an Offsite Ads attribution you were not aware of, a currency conversion, or Etsy Ads spend, which is billed separately from the fees on an order.
