Shopify fees explained: what it takes in 2026

By Fees.tools · Updated · Fees verified

Shopify charges a US store 2.9% plus $0.30 on an online order on its Basic plan, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced. That card rate is only part of the price: the plan is a subscription of $39, $105 or $399 a month billed whether you sell or not, and a surcharge applies if the money comes through someone else's gateway. This guide separates the three, with every figure computed by the same engine as the Shopify fee calculator. The rates are quoted from Shopify's pricing page for the country in question and were verified on 5 September 2026.

The three plans, and the one that changed its name

Shopify sells three plans to ordinary merchants: Basic, Grow and Advanced. The middle one used to be called "Shopify" and was renamed Grow, so any article about "the Shopify plan" describes a price list that no longer goes by that name. Plus and Enterprise sit above the three, are quoted on request, and are not priced here.

Every rate is a function of the plan — online card rate, in-person card rate and outside-gateway surcharge all move together when you change it.

PlanMonthly, USOnline card rateIn-person card rateThird-party gateway surcharge
Basic$392.9% + $0.302.6% + $0.102%
Grow$1052.7% + $0.302.5% + $0.101%
Advanced$3992.5% + $0.302.4% + $0.100.6%

On a single order the gap between the plans is small. On Basic, the fee on $100.00 is $3.20 and you keep $96.80, an effective rate of 3.2%. On Advanced, the fee on $100.00 is $2.80 and you keep $97.20, an effective rate of 2.8%. The subscription is where the money is, and whether a better card rate pays for a dearer plan is a question of volume.

The third-party gateway surcharge, and when it is waived

If a customer pays through anything other than Shopify Payments — PayPal, an outside Stripe account, a local gateway — Shopify charges a transaction fee of its own on top of whatever that gateway charges you: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, the same three percentages in all thirteen markets. It is waived entirely when Shopify Payments is the processor — the surcharge is what Shopify collects when it is not collecting the card rate.

It is a bare percentage with no cap, so it grows without limit. A $2,000 order on Basic through an outside gateway, the fee on $2,000.00 is $98.30 ($58.30 basic plan — Shopify Payments (online) plus $40.00 basic plan — third-party gateway surcharge) and you keep $1,901.70, an effective rate of 4.92%.

The toggle adds Shopify's share only, never the gateway's own rate — price that on the Stripe fee calculator or the PayPal fee calculator.

How selling in person is priced

Shopify POS takes the same order at a counter, and the in-person rate replaces the online rate rather than adding to it. Shopify publishes one in only seven of the thirteen markets: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and Singapore. The United Arab Emirates and the five euro markets publish none, so the calculator does not offer the choice there.

MarketOnline, BasicIn person, Basic
United States2.9% + $0.302.6% + $0.10
United Kingdom2% + £0.251.7%
Canada2.8% + CA$0.302.6%
Australia1.75% + A$0.301.95%
Ireland2% + €0.251.7%
New Zealand2.65% + NZ$0.301.8%
Singapore3.2% + S$0.503% + S$0.50

Five of the seven drop the fixed fee at the counter, which makes small baskets much cheaper there. The same $100 US order at a counter, the fee on $100.00 is $2.70 and you keep $97.30, an effective rate of 2.7%.

Australia is the exception: its in-person percentage is higher than its online one, so on a large ticket the counter costs more. An A$1,000 order online on Basic, the fee on A$1,000.00 is A$17.80 and you keep A$982.20, an effective rate of 1.78%. The same order at a counter, the fee on A$1,000.00 is A$19.50 and you keep A$980.50, an effective rate of 1.95%.

Thirteen markets, and they do not price alike

Shopify publishes a different schedule for every country, so carrying one market's figure across a border will be wrong.

A £100 order on Basic in the United Kingdom, the fee on £100.00 is £2.25 and you keep £97.75, an effective rate of 2.25%. A €100 order on Basic in Germany, the fee on €100.00 is €1.75 and you keep €98.25, an effective rate of 1.75%.

The last row is a fact, not a rounding: Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands publish one identical euro price list, down to the plan prices, and each of the five pages was confirmed as its own country's page before the rates were recorded. Ireland is a euro market too and does not share it — it is priced like the United Kingdom.

India is not selectable here: Shopify sells plans there but does not offer Shopify Payments, so its Indian page publishes no card rate and no third-party fee. Only a plan price exists.

The plan price is a subscription, not a per-order fee

The card rate is charged per order. The plan price is charged once a month, whether you take one order or a thousand, and Shopify never levies a share of it on a sale.

Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands€36€105€384
New ZealandUS$39US$105US$399
United Arab EmiratesUS$32US$92US$399

Two rows are billed in a currency the market does not sell in. The United Arab Emirates and New Zealand quote the plan price in US dollars while charging card fees in dirhams and New Zealand dollars. Neither Shopify nor this site converts it, so that line is stated in dollars and never added into a dirham or New Zealand dollar total.

The calculator can still show what a subscription works out at per order: enter the orders you expect in a month and it divides the plan price by them, as its own line. That count is your estimate, not something Shopify charges; at zero it stays out.

At a low order count the subscription dwarfs the card rate. A $100 order on Basic at 25 orders a month, the fee on $100.00 is $4.76 ($3.20 basic plan — Shopify Payments (online) plus $1.56 basic plan (monthly subscription)) and you keep $95.24, an effective rate of 4.76%. The same order on Advanced, the fee on $100.00 is $18.76 ($2.80 advanced plan — Shopify Payments (online) plus $15.96 advanced plan (monthly subscription)) and you keep $81.24, an effective rate of 18.76%. By a few hundred orders a month it has nearly disappeared, and only then does a lower card rate repay a dearer plan. A $100 order on Basic at 400 orders a month, the fee on $100.00 is $3.30 ($3.20 basic plan — Shopify Payments (online) plus $0.10 basic plan (monthly subscription)) and you keep $96.70, an effective rate of 3.3%. The same order on Grow, the fee on $100.00 is $3.26 ($3.00 grow plan — Shopify Payments (online) plus $0.26 grow plan (monthly subscription)) and you keep $96.74, an effective rate of 3.26%.

On $100 orders Basic stays cheapest all-in well past 150 orders a month; Grow overtakes it somewhere past 300. Average order value moves that crossover too, as the fixed $0.30 becomes a larger or smaller share of the sale, so test your own numbers rather than a rule of thumb.

Pricing so you keep a round number

Because Shopify takes a percentage plus a fixed amount, you cannot add 2.9% to the figure you want to keep — the fee is charged on the total the customer pays, including the part that covers the fee. To keep $100.00 you charge $103.30, and the fee is $3.30. The calculator's "I want to net" mode solves this for any amount, market, plan and channel.

What this guide leaves out

Plus and Enterprise are quoted on request, not published, so they are not modelled. Neither are the yearly prices: every plan price above is month-to-month, and paying a year up front lowers it. Shopify's POS Pro subscription, currency conversion, chargebacks and app, theme and shipping-label charges are outside this schedule too.

One limitation is worth stating plainly. This schedule is medium confidence: Shopify's help centre confirms the structure — rates vary by plan, and the third-party fee does not apply when Shopify Payments is the sole processor — but never restates a single percentage, so no independent numeric cross-check exists for any figure here. Each rests on its own market's pricing page, saved as a dated snapshot with the sentence it came from.

When these rates were checked

Verified on 5 September 2026, every rule effective from that date. Changes are recorded in the Shopify fee changelog, and the schedule is re-checked at least every 60 days. If a figure disagrees with what Shopify shows you, report it; the methodology explains how rules are quoted and stored.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Shopify take from a $100 order?

For a US store on Basic paid through Shopify Payments, 2.9% plus $0.30. Grow charges 2.7% + $0.30 and Advanced 2.5% + $0.30; at a counter on Shopify POS, Basic charges 2.6% + $0.10. The monthly plan price is separate.

Is the "Shopify plan" gone?

It was renamed Grow. Basic, Grow and Advanced are the three plans on the public price list, and anything describing "the Shopify plan" predates the change.

Does Shopify charge extra if I use PayPal or another gateway?

Yes — 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, on top of whatever that gateway charges you. It is waived completely when Shopify Payments is the processor, which is why an order can cost more through a gateway picked for its low rate.

Does the monthly plan fee come out of each sale?

No. It is billed once a month regardless of how much you sell. The calculator divides it by an order count you supply so you can see it per order, but that spread is your estimate: Shopify charges the plan price once, not per sale.

Why can't I choose India?

Shopify sells plans in India but does not offer Shopify Payments there, so its Indian pricing page publishes no card rate and no third-party fee. With no per-transaction rate there is nothing to calculate, so India is left out rather than shown with a borrowed figure.

Where do these numbers come from?

Each rate is quoted from Shopify's pricing page for that country, saved as a dated snapshot and stored as a rule with the sentence it came from. Comparing platforms? The Square fee calculator covers the same online-plus-counter split, and how Etsy's fees work covers a marketplace that charges listing fees rather than a subscription.
