The Client Marketplace Fee is charged to the client on top of the contract and is never deducted from your earnings. Withdrawal fees are charged once per withdrawal rather than per contract, so they are off by default.

How much does Upwork take from a $100.00 contract?
For freelance contract work in United States, Upwork charges 10% of the amount. Each fee line is rounded half-up to the nearest cent, as the platform bills it, and what you keep is the amount minus the sum of those lines.
A freelance contract work contract: on $100.00 you pay $10.00 (Freelancer Service Fee), and keep $90.00, an effective rate of 10%.
The same contract at the 15% top of Upwork's range: on $100.00 you pay $15.00 (Freelancer Service Fee), and keep $85.00, an effective rate of 15%.
Upwork's own example, $266.64 billed at 10%: on $266.64 you pay $26.66 (Freelancer Service Fee), and keep $239.98, an effective rate of 10%.
A $100 contract cashed out by wire transfer: on $100.00 you pay $10.00 (Freelancer Service Fee) and $50.00 (U.S. Dollar Wire Transfer), $60.00 in total, and keep $40.00, an effective rate of 60%.

How much does Upwork take from a $100 contract?
- It depends on the rate written into that contract. Upwork's Freelancer Service Fee runs from 0% to 15% per contract, and 10% is the rate it uses in its own worked examples: on $100 that is $10.00, leaving you $90.00. A contract at the 15% ceiling costs $15.00 and leaves $85.00; a 0% contract costs nothing. Read your rate off the contract or offer and enter it above.
Is Upwork's freelancer fee a flat 10%?
- No. Upwork's help article states that "the fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract" and that "once your contract begins, the fee is fixed and won't change". Upwork publishes no formula for how a rate is assigned to a contract, so this calculator asks you for yours and defaults to the 10% that appears in Upwork's own examples.
Who pays the Upwork Client Marketplace Fee?
- The client does, on top of what they agree to pay you. Upwork's pricing page puts it at 5% and works the example that "a $100 contract would cost $105 in total", and a client who pays from a US bank account gets "a reduced Client Marketplace Fee of 3%". None of it comes out of your earnings, so it is in the fee table above but never in your breakdown.
How much does it cost to withdraw money from Upwork?
- Direct to U.S. Bank withdrawals "are free for freelancers with a United States tax address"; from 1 September 2026 a $2.99 fee applies to each one if your tax address is outside the United States. A US dollar wire transfer costs $50.00, and Direct to Local Bank, the route a Wise account normally uses, costs $0.99. Upwork describes its PayPal and Payoneer fees only as "a small fee" without publishing an amount, so those are not modelled here.
How do I work out what to bill so I keep a specific amount?
- Switch the calculator to "I want to net" and enter the amount you want to keep. It finds the smallest contract amount whose payout lands within one cent of your target at your contract's rate, and shows the fee. At 10%, keeping $239.98 means billing $266.64 — Upwork's own example, worked backwards.
Are these Upwork fees up to date?
- Every rate here is quoted verbatim from Upwork's own help articles and pricing page and was checked on 3 September 2026. The schedule is marked medium confidence for two reasons: the freelancer fee is a per-contract range rather than a single rate, and Upwork's dedicated Client Marketplace Fee article says "up to 7.99%" where its pricing page states a flat 5% with a worked example. The 5% figure is used. Rates are re-verified at least every 60 days.
